Welcome to Kindergarten! My name is Lisa Chandler. I graduated from Wichita State University in December 2007, and had the opportunity to substitute teach in Wichita, Maize, and Goddard for a semester before taking a full time teaching position here at Holy Spirit. I am very excited about the school year and my second year of teaching! Please know that your child will be extra special to me this year as a part of my class! Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to teach your child this year at Holy Spirit. As a parent myself, I know how precious your child is to you. I also know that you are your child’s first and most important teacher. I feel blessed to be able to work with you this year as we watch your child learn and grow in Kindergarten. Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have. The best way to communicate with me this year will be through email. My email address is lchandler@holyspiritwichita.com God Bless, Mrs. Chandler Snacks: Since we are having all day kindergarten, we will have snack time each afternoon to keep our tummies from growling too much between meals. I would like to start a snack cabinet in our classroom. I would be ideal if every student could donate at least one snack per month for the whole class. There are 16 students in our class this year. We also like to focus on “health and wellness” so here are some healthy suggestions that students in the past have enjoyed: granola bars, crackers, animal crackers, graham crackers, popcorn, pretzels, pudding cups (that don’t need refrigeration), fruit snacks, teddy grahams, etc.Kindergarten.htm Rest time: Again, since we will be at school all day, we will have a brief resting time after lunch each day. Please send a beach towel or SMALL blanket, as soon as tomorrow if possible, to use during this time. No pillows please as we don’t have anywhere to store them. Prayers: There are many prayers to learn in Kindergarten: The Lord’s Prayer, Hail Mary, Glory Be, Angel of God, Grace Before Meals, Grace After Meals, Morning Offering, and Act of Contrition. I will be sending home a list of prayers along with forms to send in when your child is ready to recite each prayer. Please remember that prayers are a report card grade and require extra practice at home. Ideally, all prayers will be mastered by December. |
Word lists: This year I will be sending home sight word lists for your child to work on at home. There are eight lists to learn before the end of the school year. These are words that are difficult to read if trying to sound them out, and therefore need to be learned by sight. As your child completes each list, he/she will be allowed to illustrate a small book containing these words. I will send each book home after the word list is read at school. Behavior Plan: I plan to use a card system in my classroom (this will start next week), and each child will have a folder containing a behavior report for the week. Each student will start the day with four cards: green, yellow, pink, and red. Green is a great day. Yellow is simply a warning. If a student turns their card again and is on pink, they will walk/run (their choice) one lap at recess. A red card will mean two laps at recess. The behavior report in the folder will let you know how your child’s day was and what they may have pulled a card for. A sticker on the behavior report means a good day! I will reward good behavior with a prize from the treasure box after a child has received five stickers in their folder or had five good days. Show and Tell: Once a week, either Thursday or Friday, we will have show and tell. Your child may bring something from home that will fit in their backpack. Each child is responsible for keeping track of what they bring. Library: We will have library every Thursday morning, starting this week. Each child will be allowed to check out two books. In order to check out new books next week, your child will need to return both of his/her books on library day. Art: We will try to have art once a week, probably on Fridays. I would love to have any “guest” art teachers who are interested come and spend this time with us once in a while. Any creative parents out there, who have a good idea for an art project, please feel free to volunteer and contact me for a Friday that might work well for you to come and teach us. J
I look forward to working with all of you this year! |
