Dear Parents,
Hello! I am pleased to take this
opportunity to introduce myself to you if you are new to my
class. A good learning experience is built on a cooperative
effort among parent, child and teacher. I look forward to the
work and growth we will all accomplish this year. My
expectations for conduct and academic standards are high. With
your participation both in and out of the classroom, we can look
forward to a productive, creative and enjoyable year together.
I look forward to working with you and going on lots of
fieldtrips together. There are several important things that
you need to know:
Snacks:
For the
first semester your child will be responsible for bringing a
week’s worth of snacks for the classroom on a rotating
schedule. The snacks don’t have to be large, just enough to
stop rumbling bellies. Please send healthy snacks!!! I will let
you know via newsletter when it is your week.
Spelling
List:
Your
child’s spelling list will come home on Mondays. We will be
working in our spelling workbook and doing spelling centers to
help learn the words in class. Time at home spent learning the
words is a must!
Religion
Folder:
Your
child will be coming home with a religion study guide folder.
Please practice the prayers as well as the 10 Commandments and 7
Sacraments. Your child can mark them off on the prayer chart in
class when we test them. The extra information will help with
religion tests and sacrament preparations.
Student
of the Day and Classroom Rules:
Our
student of the day will lead us in the Morning Offering, the
Pledge of Allegiance, the School Mission Statement and our
Classroom Rules:
Today I
will…Listen when others are talking.
Today I
will…Follow directions.
Today I
will…Keep hands, feet and objects to myself.
Today I
will…Work quietly and not disturb others.
Today I
will…Show respect for school and personal property.
Today I
will…Work and play in a safe manner.
Behavior
System:
Students
will receive two cards per day in our behavior chart. Students
will have 2 laps for each card they lose for not following
rules. They may either walk them or run them. A note will be
sent home if both cards are lost during the school day. I do
regularly reward good behavior with pats on the back, treats and
stickers, and classroom behavior parties.
Adopt a
School Program:
The Adopt
a School Program is supposed to take place again this year and
firemen are scheduled to come once during the week. This year
we will read weekly readers and split into groups to do projects
with them.
BEAR
Binder:
In this
binder you will find a homework folder, graded work folder (keep
at home), spelling list and newsletter. Sign the newsletter
each weekend after you’ve read it. Keep it in the binder.
Baxter
the Bear:
A new
friend, Baxter the Bear has come to stay in our classroom for
the year. Each weekend Baxter the Bear will be sent home with
one student. Baxter comes with a log so that we know what he
did over the weekend. Baxter’s friend Brady has been on many
adventures and he already has one book full of adventures to
prove it. Enjoy Baxter and Brady’s binder when your weekend
comes up!
Reading
Rewards Program:
This year
we will be doing guided reading and each child will have a
canvas reading bag with folder. Inside the bag they will have a
reading folder with a goal they are trying to reach, AR books
and their library books. The bag needs to come to school each
day. When students accomplish the goal marked in their folder
they can move their car and get a prize. I can’t wait for
surprise visitors and prize giveaways! On your marks, get set,
go read!
Homework
Policy:
Student’s
homework should take no longer than 20 minutes a night to
complete (unfinished work, spelling word practice, math
flashcards and reading goal work). Students will lose a card in
the behavior chart for missing assignments. If problems arise,
please let me know. Also, write a note if you notice they are
having difficulties on a concept so I can cover it again in
class. Your student will make great progress if we work
together.
Volunteers:
Parents,
let me know if you have a special talent and want to use it in
the classroom. You can listen to children say their prayers,
work on a center with individuals, or help them accomplish their
reading folder goals.
Wish
List:
Occasionally I will put items we need in class on the
newsletter. Let me know if you can send in the items.
Birthdays:
Your
child will be baking a cake (in the microwave!) to celebrate
his/her birthday! If your child’s birthday falls on a weekend
or during the summer we will be picking another “unbirthday”
day. Do not have your child hand out party invitations at
school unless all 1st and 2nd grade
students are invited.
Book
Orders:
When your
child comes home with a book order, please make a check made
payable to Scholastics. I will not accept cash. When you order
books for your child, we earn free classroom books!
Absentees:
Please
let me know ASAP if your child will be gone. I appreciate
advanced notice. I may call you if you haven’t called me.
Again,
Welcome! Contact me….
Please
feel free to contact me about any questions or concerns you may
have. My classroom door is usually open and I am here late a
few nights for latchkey. You can leave a message with the
secretary, but I never check my phone messages left on the
recorder.
Let’s
Have a Great School Year,
Ms. Lies
